Queenstown Trip March 2025
Thirty lucky Nomads descended on Queenstown on the 27th and 28th of March. We had four from Australia and one from Zimbabwe to make it an International competition. The New Zealander’s were broken into 2 groups, Kiwis and Internationals. You easily became an international player if you regularly travelled overseas.
Day One – Queenstown Golf Club
We arrived at Queenstown Golf Club (formerly Kelvin Heights) with perfect weather, no breeze and superbly fast greens. Nomads have not played her for around 10 years so this was the first time not playing Arrowtown. Everyone enjoyed the course and agreed it was well worth including in the trip.
Results for Queenstown Golf Club
Winner – Ian Braddock 37 points
Runner Up – Wayne Scholtz 35 points
Kiwis – 4; Internationals – 4
Average Score 31.3 points
After golf we had our opening dinner at The Queenstown Golf Club. The team at the QGC did a great job with the menu and the service. Our two Captains Jeff Meltzer for the Kiwis and David Hodge for the Internationals spent some time entertaining us.
Day Two – Millbrook Remarkables Course
Another perfect day 23 degrees, no wind and a well-prepared course following on from the NZ Open. We had a later tee off time at 12 noon so there was plenty of time to explore Queenstown in the morning before golf or arrive early and warm up.
Winner – Mark Rodger 36 points (on a countback)
Runner Up – Peter Griffiths 36 points
Overall after 2 days: Kiwis – 6; Internationals – 8
Average Score 30.8 after average 1.1 points adjustment = Ave 29.7
Day Three – Millbrook Coronet Course
Another stunning Queenstown day, almost no wind and back to Millbrook again for the new Coronet course
Results for Coronet
Winner – Fortune Gonah 38 points (on a countback)
Runner Up – Paul Hurtley 38 points
Overall after 3 days: Kiwis – 12; Internationals – 15
Average Score 27.6 after average 2.4 points adjustment = Ave 25.1
While the weather was great the course was still difficult with plenty of Irish drops being played.
Final Night Dinner
After Coronet we met at Tanoshi a Japanese restaurant in the centre of Queenstown for the final night and ceremony of the Kiwis handing over the trophy to the Internationals.
This was a very casual restaurant in the middle of Queenstown. We had booked the restaurant for exclusive use, and we filled every seat in it including chairs at the bar. It was a fitting place for our prizegiving dinner that went on late into the night especially once the Sake arrived.

Day Four – Jacks Point
An early tee off at 8am saw us arriving in the dark at 7.30am for another magnificent Queenstown day. We had a multi tee start and fortunately it was not as cold as it has been and no wind. The course was in great conditions and the greens were running fast.
Results for Jacks Point
Winner – Phil Stickland 37 points
Runner Up – Ken Buck 36 points
Average Score 27.6 using normal DotGolf handicaps
Over lunch at Jack’s Point the overall results were announced. Lucky Adamou and John Philpott were both equal on 136 points. According to the Nomad’s bye-laws all competition draws will be decided by lot so we asked the proshop to draw one of the two cards as winner. Lucky Adamou who was the winner last year was crowned this year’s winner.

The Hills
Most people departed home after lunch at Jack’s but thanks to a very kind invitation from Ken Buck a few stayed over for a game at The Hills the following day.
We met there for breakfast and had a very enjoyable round of golf followed by lunch and then to the airport. The Hills was as immaculate as ever with a few new pieces of art. As the NZ Open was not played there this year the rough was much shorter than we have experienced in the past and it was relatively easy to find your ball and play from the rough.

See you all next year in Queenstown.
