Golf Courses
Cape Kidnappers (Hawke’s Bay)
The American designer of Cape Kidnappers, Tom Doak, who is also well known for his prize-winning courses in the US, has said that, ‘If Cape Kidnappers were a book it would be an epic. Enjoy your game and enjoy the setting (because) you may never play golf somewhere like this again’. Like Kauri Cliffs, Cape Kidnappers plays above the ocean, atop dramatic cliffs, but unlike Kauri Cliffs, where the shape of the land dictates play along the shoreline, this course runs to and from the edge. Cape Kidnappers is built on a ridge-and-valley landscape with spectacular sea views.
Hastings Golf Club (Bridge Pa)
The present course located at Bridge Pa was not established until 1912, and prior to that, the club had several different homes.
With persistence from active club members, as well as skilful Greenkeepers, conditions and membership blossomed at Bridge Pa. By 1947, the land had been tamed, and a decision was made to take Bridge Pa to the next level, with the decision to seek the New Zealand Championships.
While the changes to Bridge Pa initiated by Skittrup and Harold Christie took some time to develop (and for players to adjust to), by midway through the 1970s the Hastings course was being hailed as something special, not just by people from other parts of Hawke’s Bay and New Zealand, but overseas as well.
Throughout the 1980’s the course continued to develop. It was recognised as one of the country’s premier layouts, and hosted many high profile events over the subsequent years. Hastings Golf Club has been a venue for every major national tournament. This is a remarkable record for the club, and a fitting tribute to those responsible for the care and maintenance of the course, as well as those members who dedicated time to organising these prestigious events.
Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary (Taupo)
Officially opened February 1970 by the Tourist Hotel Corporation. Special guests including the Minister of Tourism Hon. H. J Walker were invited to an exhibition match followed by a celebratory luncheon. Today, the basic layout of the golf course remains true to the original design of Commander John Harris, Michael Wolveridge and Peter Thomson. Ownership has changed but the drive to provide a world class golfing experience continues. There have been many enhancements to the golf course environment including a strong focus on conservation and providing a predator free sanctuary for wildlife.
Tieke Golf Estate
Tieke Golf Estate is New Zealand’s latest golf experience: a riverbed masterpiece, crafted from the original bed of Aotearoa’s longest river.
With natural river sand, fine fescue turf, and a world-class design, Tieke delivers a blend of links and private valley golf that leaves you feeling like the only ones on the course.
Since opening in late 2021, Tieke has quickly earned marquee course status and a place in New Zealand’s Top 20 Golf Courses.
